I hope Hey, White Girl provides an opportunity for authentic engagement in your classroom and promotes a sense of community as students learn a slice of complicated American history through the form of a novel. I hope the book opens the “can of worms” that some want to seal.
I hope students learn the power of empathy when they “climb into another’s skin and walk around in it,” as Atticus Finch said.
I’ve included materials that you are free to use and adapt in whatever way is useful and makes sense for your classroom. They are more like jumping off points, because every teacher is a creator and every classroom is different. I would love to know how it goes, and I would be happy to communicate with your students if the opportunity presents itself.
In addition, if you would like classroom copies of Hey, White Girl please use the contact form on the website so I may provide an educator discount for you.
